Learn How To Persuade People To Do What You Want

By Alex Philips

Persuasive ability is a quality that adds profit in most areas of life. Some people are naturally born with this ability, while others have to learn it along the way. Persuasiveness is what gives successful Businessmen edge over other, gains people promotion at their work place, makes people buy from us, makes people open up to us, etc...

The skillful art of persuasion requires: confidence, maturity, charisma, passion, being patient with others, respect and care for people, and could be mastered over a period of persistent practice. Trying hard to force your views on others can achieve nothing but harm you, as people will always avoid dealing with you. No one likes being opposed.

A false mindset to adopt is viewing people you set out to persuade as your opponents. This will make you make all the wrong decisions in your course of action. Persuasion is not a game or battle, you cannot fight someone you hope to benefit from. You'll be doing yourself good if you view persuasion as a means of helping others to help yourself. People you try to persuade are intelligent and always seek their own gains just as you. So you have to appeal to their values to get them do what you want.

No matter how stupid you think a person's idea is, make no mistake by outrightly rejecting the "stupid" idea; this will make you the enemy. You'll have a better shot at persuading this person if can respectfully get him/her to talk you through the reasons behind the idea. Listen patiently and never interrupt. When the person is through, summarize the points that have been made. If this is done well, the person may now start seeing the flaws in his/her idea. At this point you can initiate your idea. Be careful to present your idea in such a way that will make this person first see his/her own benefits.

Straight forward logic is always king, because human-beings by nature always seek the most stress-free way out. However, this requires you do a good research to have the issue at hand wrapped around your finger. You'll also need to prepare your answers to possible questions and objections. When it's a question, give a straight answer, but when it's an objection, then first listen attentively to the point being raised, agree to acknowledge the objector's intelligence, and finally suggest your super idea in a way that presents the most benefit to your "Persuadee".

Honesty is one thing you must drill into yourself if you want to be uber-persuasive. Lie to someone now to have them do something and it will later come to hunt you. If you make a mistake or have made a mistake in the past that is related to the issue at hand, be open about it. There is something endearing about people who are open about their weaknesses. It doesn't show you are incompetent, rather it shows you are too sure of yourself that you can talk about your mistakes openly and not fear it will hurt your efforts. You also need to be honest about the fact that you will also gain if things go your way. Mind you people are not so stupid to believe that you will spend your limited time to make them do something that is solely for their benefit. - 31857
