The Many Uses Of Subliminal Suggestion

By Trevor Johnson

Although many people may not be aware of it, subliminal suggestion has been used for thousands of years by individuals, governments, and advertisers. In many cases the individuals who use this technique are not doing so intentionally but feel that they have the unique ability to persuade others to their point of view naturally.

Hypnotherapists use suggestion when they are performing hypnosis on an individual. Their goal is to relax a person into a state where they can receive a suggestion at the subconscious level and begin to change their lifestyle or behavior. Subliminal suggestion works much the same way. Advertisers have found that people who go to the theatre and are enjoying a movie are relaxed and open to suggestion.

The most common form of subliminal suggestion that was very popular with advertisers was suggestions made during films and movies. While an individual watching a movies is seeing the action taking place on the screen and listening to the dialogue, the mind is seeing each individual frame of the film. Advertisers found that by inserting a frame of a product or food into a film the quality of the picture was not diminished, but sales of items at the theatre counter went up.

The US government recognized the validity of the argument that purposefully placing subliminal messages in media was not right and created strict regulations regarding it's use in TV, radio and other areas that the FCC had jurisdiction over. This has impacted the length of many movies as they have been moved from the theatre to television. Prior to showing a movie on television all subliminal messages must be removed from the film.

But subliminal suggestion is not just an effective tool for advertisers. It is also an effective tool for individuals who wish to change a behavior or lifestyle of a family member. When all other efforts have proven futile it is often through the use of subliminal suggestion, which is free and easy to do that parents will find the most effective results.

One way is to go into a child's room when they have gone to sleep and gently whisper in their ear, "When you see a red can you will want to....(study, be happy, etc.)" This statement is not repeated, just said once very quietly. The key to success of subliminal messages is that they are short and the conscious mind is not aware of the suggestion. One will often find that after a few days they will notice a change without any effort on the part of the person making the suggestion. - 31857
