Achieve Your Goals With Self-Hypnosis

By Keira Adams

Self-hypnosis, as the name implies, involves an individual hypnotizing him or herself, most commonly by the technique of auto-suggestion. Auto-suggestion in the psychological sense of the term is defined as: "The process by which a person induces self-acceptance of an opinion, belief, or plan of action". The technique can be useful in helping someone to increase motivation for a difficult or unpleasant task, such as quitting smoking or sticking to a diet. Self-hypnosis can be carried out by means of a learned routine, or by listening to a self-hypnosis recording of some kind, or by some combination of the two.

Emile Coue was one of the earliest proponents of self hypnosis. He believed that at least some problems could be cured or alleviated by a change in our unconscious thought, which could only be achieved by the use of one's imagination. Coue did not consider himself a healer per se; rather he believed that he could train people to heal themselves by affecting organic changes in themselves through the use of auto suggestion.

These days there are many different methods of self-hypnosis out there, some more reputable than others. Choosing a technique that works for you is in part dependent upon what you want to use it for. If in doubt, it's best to consult a trained professional first.

When you decide to learn how to hypnotize yourself, you'll want to get all the information that is needed to go through the process the right way. You can visit your local bookstore for great reading materials that will tell you more about the history of hypnotism, as well as books that will give you step-by-step instructions on how to hypnotize yourself.

Now that you've read up on the subject, you'll need to find a quiet place in your home where you know that you won't be disturbed. Then, you'll need to get in a comfortable position, and you should put yourself in a relaxed state. Turn off all electronic devices, and make sure that the room is completely quiet. You should also have an idea of how long you want to be hypnotized. Chances are, your body will keep time for you naturally. Then you'll need to think about the pictures in your mind that are associated with the reason you are hypnotizing yourself. You will then need to replace these images and associations with more positive images, so that your thinking will change once you become fully conscious again. You will also need to implant positive suggestions into your subconscious in order to change your habits.

In order to enter a hypnotic state, focus your attention on a point or object slightly above eye level. Take a few deep breaths while repeating the word "relax". When breathing out imagine that you are ridding yourself of all the "bad air" that is inside you and replacing it with all the fresh "good air" that you are breathing in. Close your eyes and try to focus for a few seconds on sounds that you can actually hear. For example, if it is raining outside, focus on the sound of the rain tapping on the roof or against the window. - 31857
