Find Confidence In Yourself With NLP Anchoring

By Trevor Johnson

NLP Anchoring, or Neuro Linguistic Programming Anchoring, is similar to the classical conditioning theory taught in psychology classes. NLP Anchoring is based on Pavlov's Dogs where he taught them that when they heard the sound of a bell, they were fed. Eventually, just the sound of the bell caused the dogs to salivate because they associated the bell with food.

The anchors are the stimuli that bring about a certain response or reaction, either positive or negative. Fidgeting when nervous is one such example. Almost anything can be an anchor - advertisers use this all the time to influence us - the difference with the NLP version is that it's a deliberate thing that you (or someone else) has done.

All of us have had good and bad experiences in our lives. Maybe some experiences were so bad that now, even the thought of a similar situation evokes the negative emotions. In order to overcome these feelings associated with the experience, we have to concentrate on finding positive memories to associate with the experience.

For instance, if you want to remain calm and peaceful, think of a memory that evokes this emotion. Concentrate on that memory while staying with your body in the present. If that feeling starts fading, focus on that memory again. If you keep doing this, eventually, your mind will associate the event with a new feeling.

Another exercise in the NLP Anchoring process is to associate touch with a positive feeling. Maybe there is a certain gesture or even a certain spot on your body, finger, hair or hand, which you can learn to connect positive feelings to. Then, when you start feeling the negative feelings, you can touch that area to help you bring about positive feelings.

NLP Anchoring can also be associated with a person. If you have someone that you really love to spend time with, think of them when negative situations arise. We all have the situations in life that even just the thought of them makes us cringe. The above mentioned NLP Anchoring will help to make the situations more bearable if you practice. - 31857
