Along with the obvious health risks with smoking such as lung cancer and heart disease, this new study shows an increase in oral cancers, diminished ability of taste buds and rejection of certain dental procedures. Smoking can also cause the gums to recede, leaving the roots of the tooth exposed.

People who are missing teeth or have lost a tooth due to an accident rely heavily on dental devices such as dentures and implants to improve their oral health. Implants are a new alternative to dentures of the past. Implants work similar to dentures, as they provide a false tooth to replace a missing one. They are used in people who have lost individual teeth, or to create a bridge and for better support to older dentures. Implants work by functioning as the "root" of the tooth because they are made from titanium and are implanted in the jaw. They are coated with a substance called hydroxyapatite which acts as the same chemical makeup of our own bones making the implants more effective than dentures.

It is important for the dentist to be sure the patient is right for implants before performing the procedure. The biggest problem with implant rejection is smoking and other diseases such as diabetes which both affect the amount of blood that reaches the implant. The most common dental problem facing tobacco users in the beginning are minor things such as bad breath and teeth discoloration. According to a study done by the American Dental Association, 32% of smokers needed to have a filling replaced, 10.1% needed a tooth extraction and 22.5% needed a major dental cleaning because of periodontal disease (impaired blood flow). Smoking can also be a factor in the loss of jaw bone, gum disease leading to tooth loss, and increased plaque and tartar build up. According to WebMD, 90% of patients with oral cancer use tobacco products and of those 90%, 37% who keep using tobacco products after having one cancerous lesion removed will develop another compared to 6% of those who quit smoking.

Tobacco secession is the only way to combat not only dental problems but other health problems. Quitting is never easy and a challenge every smoker fears, however almost every smoker fears cancer too and quitting won't kill, but cancer will.

There are many ways available to quit smoking. Some patients choose to try prescription treatments such as Zyban or Wellbutrin which can help curb cravings. Others try over the counter treatments such as the nicotine patch or gum. Other nontraditional treatments include hypnosis, acupuncture and herbal remedies. Those who are interesting in quitting should speak with their dentist of physician to develop a plan and find out what works best for the patient. Since each person is different, each individual plan will be different. Some people use a combination of treatments to quit. Like driving, most of your life is spent on autopilot. The unconscious mind runs its programs and patterns only looking for guidance when a decision needs to be made.

Ask yourself, what do people do when they accomplish something. Either they throw their fists in the air, or they pull them back into their sides. You've seen it before. Everyone uses the fist pump instinctively. Reading an article in science daily, I discovered that even blind people use the fist pump. Pretty amazing that its so ingrained in our culture. It doesn't actually matter which particular move you make, fists up or pulled into the sides. Either one will instantly give you the feeling that you're successful at whatever doing. I use this pattern interrupt nlp technique all the time. Especially when I get frustrated at some sales presentation I'm working on. When I'm just burning with frustration I'll throw my fists in the air and shout "Yyeeessss!" It works every time. That gesture makes me feel like I just accomplished whatever it is I am working on. I've even done it in front of other people by acting like I'm stretching and screaming "Yeeaaahh" inside my head.

When I first learned this technique I thought everyone would think I had finally lost it. The exact opposite occurred. "You stop smoking easily," or "You always do well on tests, " or "you are very smart," or whatever they want. Spend about fifteen minutes during this section. Speak slowly and softly.

After you've given them several commands, it's time to wake them up. Take your time, and move them slowly from being relaxed to up and awake. A slow count from one to five is usually a good way to do this. For fun, do this with a romantic partner and take turns hypnotizing each other. - 31857

Often we set ourselves up for failure in sports when we begin to think of our flaws. For instance, a basketball player might feel too short or not fast enough. Being short may be true, but this should not effect how you play the game. Not every basketball player is tall, but if you know how to play the game, this will help you. If you are not fast enough, this is something that can be fixed, through both physical workouts and mental workouts. By identifying what limits you mentally to be slow, you can then become physically fast. It could possibly be a memory you had that is holding you back, or maybe a learned behavior. If someone continues to tell you that you are too slow, you begin to believe you are. Over coming this belief alone can be difficult.

Most sports are not games of luck. A baseball player doesn't hit 5 homeruns in a row because he was lucky, he is focused. If you are not in that zone, it is hard to perform at your best. Often there are outside pressures that influence an athlete's performance such as pressure from coaches, fans or parents, a loud negative person in the stands, or maybe you simply psyched yourself out before the game even started by worrying you would have a bad game. Identifying what makes you lose focus, and learning new tricks to keep you in the zone. You can become not lucky, but focused.

Bump, set, spike, side out. Volleyball is a game of skill and to some extent luck, but with improved skill you can create your own luck. By learning visual and mental cues, you can teach your body how to be on point and improve your skill level. When your mind has powerful successes they become easier to recreate on the court during the game.

The ultimate athlete loves himself, his team and the game. This love builds a better, stronger, more valuable athlete. If you are constantly worrying about how you did in the game or how bad your team mate is then you are doing yourself, your team and the sport a disservice. If you were always told how bad you are at something or how if you teammate would have just passed you the ball you could have won, you are allowing these experiences to take over the game. You are no longer the best you can be. Once you learn how to deal with these feelings and memories, you will become an amazing athlete.

Sure you can work out at the gym for hours on end to improve your skills, or you can try to focus on something else during the game, but you have not really dealt with the issue. For example, there was a incident in America whereby a hypnotist persuaded bank and shop workers to willingly hand him money which he then stole.

Memories and Your Behavior

You, like everyone, have memories that can affect how you feel. You can remember a happy memory and feel a bit of the happy emotion. Just as you can remember a sad memory and feel the sadness.

There is obviously a close connection between our emotions and memories. Almost as if the emotion is part of the memory. Our memories are always in our minds so it makes sense that the emotions in our memories can constantly have an effect on how we feel.

This can cause psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress and depression. It can also cause more basic disruption in your life like fears, phobias and high stress.

The most popular way to deal with these sorts of problems is prescription medication. But, medication only tries to help the 'symptoms' instead of treating the 'cause'. Long term results are usually just long term symptom management.

The key to long term help with these issues would appear to be the emotional association with the memory. What would happen if that association could be erased, reduced or even changed?

There is research using a medication called propranolol that can be used as an "amnesia drug". The purpose is to directly disrupt the connection between our memories and the emotions they are associated with.

Described in the Journal of Psychiatric Research, they talk about psychiatrists at McGill University and Harvard University using the drug to disrupt the memories of trauma victims. The drug reduces the emotional connection with the memory while leaving the conscious part of the memory.

With this process, people still have the memory, but the emotion is reduced or detached. The potential problems with this process, such as permanence or side effects, are not known.

There are other ways to reduce and change the emotion connected to memories. Other processes that are well tested, well established and without side-effects.

In particular, hypnosis. Hypnosis seems better suited for this process since, when in hypnosis, you are using the emotional part of your mind. This is very evident when working with traumatic memories from childhood. When re-experiencing memories from childhood a person often 'feels' younger than their current age. You tend to experience memories with the same age of mind that you originally experienced the situation.

When using modern hypnosis to re-experience a traumatic memory, the hypnotist needs to be properly trained for the process to be quick and effective. When these conditions are met, the client can experience the memory with the perspective of adulthood. This alone will often reduce or negate the emotions involved.

In past years many chains such as McDonalds had the public guessing about nutritional content but after a large public out cry, fast food and sit down restaurants relented.
